Training Wheels and “Check-Engine” Lights

Colossians 2:20-23 – If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  1. Hi Kirk.

Yep. I’m stalking people from Marantha. You all know me as the guy who used to dress in black just so I could make a point of feeling out of fellowship with you all.

At some point I almost left God completely.

But He called me back. I am a re-dedicated follower of the Messiah, the name of power given to mankind from heaven itself being “Yeshua,” or “Waters From Jehovah / Deliverer.”

I realize that in this post you use the verse, Colossians 2:20-23, which reads, “If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—“Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.”

Did you read the first part of the passage?

“Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ…”

I want to share with you something though… that grace makes the Torah able to be followed. Because of Christ, we no longer have to fear the consequence of disobedience to the Torah. We now get to enjoy it since it is God’s Law and His good pleasure.

    It’s something to pray about.

    Good luck. Remember Mortality.

  2. Another question I have to ask in regards to the passage you read here…

Have you considered the concept that the Judiazers were looking to get people to follow a document called “The Talmud” which was the spoken traditions of the Jews….

While Paul was an obedient servant to Christ, and followed the Teaching?

  3. Unlike most religious movements in history, the Messianic movement cannot be ascribed to any one source. Of course, we ultimately find our source in the Sacred Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation, but the modern movement, which became prominent only at the tail end of the 20th Century, was not the result of a single teacher establishing a congregation, and then that congregation establishing another, and so forth. Rather, we pretty much appeared all over the world almost spontaneously. While on the one hand we believe this to be evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit, on the other it means that there is a great diversity of bodies that call themselves “Messianic.”

The HRM is a coalition of organizations which aim to bring the doctrines taught under two-house theology together, and invite other organizations which worship God under obedience to Yeshua’s name.

As a theologian, I encourage you to look into this stuff… as it has a great deal to do with some of the things God is doing in our world today.

    Thanks.
